Independent Thought Behind Powerful Voices
I am the owner of this website. I apologise, but for personal reasons I wish to remain semi-anonymous. However, clearly, as you have arrived on this webpage presumably to learn something, it is only right that you should know a little bit about its author. The picture of the lionesses was chosen, not because my wife is a cat lover but lions like humans, are a social animal. Our own species needs to learn how to live with itself.
My Background
My parents came to the UK, having twice been refugees. The first time was to escape the Nazis and the second time the Soviets. Born and brought up in the United Kingdom, I went onto medical school and spent many years as a GP with an interest in mental health and psychology. Over the years, I gained managerial experience and know-how working on the inside of both health authorities and mental health providers.
My Perspective on Politics
The short response to the heading is not simply to make the world a better place for my daughters, but the whole planet is in trouble and needs rescuing. Communication, technology and travel have made it no longer possible for any nation to be isolationist. The repercussions of what happens in one place are felt around the world.
I have always had an interest in politics, not party politics but more the interactions of politicians and why politicians behave as they do. The turning point was the Brexit referendum, not the outcome but the manner in which the outcome was achieved. An election is an opinion poll that changes the government. The only time when the opinion has been in favour of leaving the EEC was on referendum day. Remainers were accused of being scaremongers. And yet being concerned about an outcome of a one-way journey is a natural human emotion which we ignore at our peril.
For the last 10 years, it has been clear to me to see that politicians are failing. Why? We are on a slippery slope, and if we are not careful, we may end up the same way as the USA.
What I Am Doing
Following the years of Covid and parliamentary sleaze I started asking “what are the fundamental ailments within our democracy? There are many but primary is that unlike other professional groups such as doctors, nurses, solicitors, engineers, etc., politicians are not licenced and do not have the threat of a lifelong ban to practice. I satisfied myself that there a workable system. I write about this and other matters on these patients.
I have joined a number of campaigning organisations to encourage the discussion in the belief that these ideas will ultimately prevail.
What This Website is About
The site largely but not exclusively covers my writings on the topic. They are intended to cover thoughts and ideas that may be novel to many. I hope they make you think. There are also articles dedicated to human nature, reflecting my interest in psychological well-being.
My Core Beliefs
My underlying ethos is very much one of equality and diversity. Highlighting differences and creating division or naming enemies as scapegoats is anti-democratic and must be called out when seen. We need to work with human nature and bring out the positive and good in people. People are born good-everybody. We make mistakes because for whatever reason, we have been placed in situations in which we have not been able to cope. Democracy is a culture.
Why I Write
Human self-expression is a fundamental prerequisite to mental well-being and growth. This can be at the local level in discussion with family, friends, work colleagues, the social club, etc. It can be at the national level. Allowing safe self-expression for an individual and collectively for the community is at the heart of democracy. Democracy is a culture. It is a way of thinking. We may recognise intuitively that a proposal or action is anti-democratic, but can we put it into words and explain to others the reasons why? I hope this website will help you by giving the rational underpinnings of why democracy is the best system of government.
